Physics - Electrons&atoms(spectre), good knowledge needed to answer...?

when an electron is added to an atom in a particle accelerator, for instance, it gives a electron surrounding the atom energy which, when its enough will move the electron from the grounded state to its 1st excited state etc. , what happens if the energy given is too much and makes the electron leave the orbit of the atom? does it come back to the ionization level? or can it join to another atom near by?
