I'am 37 weeks pregnant I had very strong and painful contractions last night, But I'am not dilated at all.?

So my Dr. says maybe within a week i will have this baby. Is that possible even if I'am not dilated? I'am very confused, why would she tell me that? Maybe because of the contractions err what?
